You are going to die. I am going to die. All of us are going to die. And yet, we don’t talk about it in this culture. We are afraid of confronting our own mortality which is a result of the insecurities we have around this topic. We keep pushing it to the back of our minds. But when is the right time to talk about it then? Much too often we wait until it’s too late. But if we face death and all its aspects now, dying and letting someone die might become a little easier. Society and everyday life leaves no space to deal with this taboo topic. The goal of my bachelor thesis is to help start an open conversation about death and dying and show that it is possible to deal with it without all the big emotions we are so afraid of.

BACHELOR

KARTENSPIEL + APP

2020

I created a card game with 30 questions divided into the three categories life, dying and death. The questions range from asking about your own mortality and living life accordingly, some organisational aspects of dying but also your personal principals and wishes regarding end of life care to decisions that need to be made for when you are gone. These cards work as a conversation starter with close friends and family. The goal is to answer them all and exchange these information with your loved ones to make sure everybody knows your wishes, so they won’t have to worry about these decisions later.

With the cards comes a booklet with additional information. During my research for this project I realized there is so much we don’t know about – for example burial methods, living will, organ donation or the ecological aspect of burial and cremation. So in order to have a profound conversation, this book gives you the most important details and is also a good read to prepare for the talk in advance.

As we are living in a digital century there is also an app as a counterpart to the analogue card game. You can have a conversation the same way you do with the cards and answer all the questions with your friends and family. But the app even goes a little further as you can answer in writing and therefore document your wishes in case needed. Additionally you can read all the information found in the booklet and also some forms and checklists making the preparation a little easier.
